Open letter to the CCMA

Given the gravity of the situation of climate and ecological emergency in which we find ourselves, we are calling on the media to fulfil their responsibility to the people by clearly recognising this situation of emergency, and treating the subject with the importance and coherence it deserves.

We are addressing ourselves firstly to our country’s media, given that they are the property of everyone and are the ones who hold a more obvious mandate of public service.

In recent years the workers of the Catalan Corporation of Audio-visual Media (CCMA) have addressed the people on various occasions, expressing the necessity of defending the media’s fundamental role in maintaining the democratic, social and cultural health of the country. They have done so in especially critical moments such as the cuts in 2011:

“The media of the regional government hold a key role in guaranteeing free and contrasting information which allows citizens to form clear opinions about both social and national situations and for this reason we cannot allow them to become debilitated, which would weaken their public services, of community and service to the Catalan people”

Or because of the regional government of Catalonia´s the intervention in the application of Article 155:

“The existence of a public communication platform which guarantees an honest relationship between its professionals and the general public, and which counts on the support of the democratically elected representatives, is more necessary than ever”

Precisely because we agree with, and take on these statements as ours, we believe that it is fundamental to highlight the media’s responsibility to communicate regarding the enormity of the challenge our society is facing from the climate emergency. It’s a reality already hanging over us, with many consequences without historic precedents; environmental, energy, social, political and cultural, etc. it is the most serious challenge humanity, and of course our country, has, and has ever had, to face.

More than a decade ago climate change was popularly labelled “an uncomfortable truth”. But now, on the brink of the third decade of the century, this label has been easily exceeded. Nowadays talk about climate change is confusing and imprecise. We first have to recognise that what we are facing is a real climate emergency on a worldwide scale. The scientific community is very clear in this respect. And now it is no longer an uncomfortable truth, but an inescapable reality.

And anything that isn’t open dialogue and information on the subject, is hiding, evading, confusing and disarming society’s ability to react.

And it is in this context that we appeal to both the governing bodies of the CCMA (Catalonia Radio and Catalonia television), and to all the professionals who work there, to comply with this responsibility to the society that they serve.

• Because the role of public media is fundamental to present to all citizens a rigorous, responsible, calm analysis of this subject, explained clearly, coherently, without euphemisms, without marginalisation, in proportion to its importance, either in informative, meteorological or other large-audience media services and platforms.
• Because from the public sector, and allied with the general public, it is the only possible way to resist the pressure of lobbies and business interests, which still today have more weight in the way the climate emergency is disguised by most of the media.
• Because we need a new way to look at reality, a new vision of life, and of the climate and its repercussions. We have to stop considering spring temperatures in winter as “good weather”. Or we have to focus on the rising minimum temperatures, not only the maximum, since these also have an impact on the increase in mortality and disease. Or on other important questions like the relationship between climate factors and human cycles. And the public media have to play an important part in this new perspective.
• Because, for these reasons, the public media can play a key role of leadership and influence the rest of the media to confront the challenges of the climate emergency. A well planned informational effort will be needed to support and accompany the enormous process of transition, economic, energy, production, social and cultural, which we will have to face up to. And we need this soon enough to make sure the process is inclusive and democratic and is socially and environmentally just.
• Because looking reality in the eye, painful as it may be, explaining what is happening and why it is happening, is the only way the social unrest we see all around us is not infected by fascism nor encourages authoritarian solutions and hate speech, as is already beginning to happen. It is the only way to build collective and democratic alternatives.

We are seeing before our eyes how all over Europe and the five continents a movement is growing, a movement of thousands of people, social groups, international networks, an important part of the scientific community and,notably, young people to whom the coming decades belong. A movement that appeals to us to take the future into our own hands so as not to leave it in the hands of elitist politicians and global economies, who until now and for decades, have shown their stubborn incapability to act for the common good, never giving up an ounce of their power nor benefits, not even when humanity and the planet are at risk.

This is why we say the only way out is a rebellion for life. This non-violent rebellion calls to each and every one of us, wherever we are from… We want, we hope, we entreat and we urge the media, which belongs to everyone, to begin this rebellion as soon as possible.
